Changing Your Focus Helps You Get Out of Debt

Few realize their debt habit until it is too late. Then, when they try to get out of debt, it is very difficult to break this habit. It’s as almost if they are addicted. It is an addiction of sorts that requires drastic changes in focus in order to get out of debt. The debt habit must be broken before anything positive happens with efforts to get out of debt. Let’s look at some ways you can change your focus and begin a successful journey to get out of debt.

Get out of debt and don’t worry about what your friends spend their money on. All of your friends at work have the latest in some technological gadget and you must have one too. They all went out and bought some designer outfit and suddenly your wardrobe needs upgrading. Or, you walk into a discount department store and hope your friends don’t see you. Peer pressure to spend is difficult to overcome and is even more complicated by the fact that marketers try to get you to spend on credit. Marketers are skilled at convincing consumers that they do need something they really cannot afford. Don’t let yourself keep falling into the same debt trap of your peers.

Stop elaborate gift giving if you want to get out of debt. People often get into deep debt around the holiday season because their attitude is that all their friends and family need are the best gifts possible. The only limiting factor for these people is the credit available on their cards. Elaborate gift givers are viewed as generous people but in reality they are only that way because they can easily borrow what they need. If you recognize yourself as a credit gift giver, realize that when you run out of credit it you may find yourself alienated by friends and family who grew accustomed to your lavish gift giving. If you want to break this habit, learn how to save for the holiday season, shop for discounts in the off season, and make your own gifts.

Live with a little inconvenience will help you get out of debt. Also, let your family learn to be inconvenienced. Convenience has a heavy influence on debt accumulation. Probably the best example of convenience that causes debt is the frequency of eating at restaurants and paying with the credit card. It may be true that you have no time to cook but there are all sorts of creative ways where you can stay fed on a budget. Make it a rule that you never use your credit card on consumables such as food because you will be paying interest on something that will be long gone in one sitting.

You will not solve the social ills of the world. Marketers flash the pictures of starving children and make it so easy for you to pull out your credit card and help today. It all seems so noble and you get a good feeling. Giving to others from your credit card might seem noble but it is a sure roadmap to financial disaster. Keep in mind that you will not have the ability to be charitable in the future if your finances are destroyed. Also consider that little of what you donate gets to the intended destination after the sponsor’s fees are taken. Make a policy of giving only when you have it to give while you are trying to get out of debt.
